As a part of National Volunteer Week, we've decided to sit down and have a chat with some of our current, fantastic volunteers. Today, we sat down with James, who is currently volunteering as a Programming Assistant within our Broadcast department.
Originally from the UK, James moved to Australia to continue his (already successful) career in the media industry. James had already worked for some large media conglomerates, including the BBC and Al Jazeera in broadcast and traffic roles. He later decided that he needed to take a break and move into a different area of the industry.
After settling in Australia, James and his partner started a production company that focused on providing a range of services that were accessible and affordable for small business and non-profit organisations.
After working in this field for a while, James began to miss working in broadcast roles, but wasn’t ready to move back into a large scale, commercial media organisation. This is when he found C31.
Since November 2018, James has been with us as Programming Assistant, helping with the ingest, scheduling, broadcast and presentation for various shows we feature on air.
"I was interested in volunteering for C31 as I share similar beliefs around allowing access to content creation for the community" James said. "I wanted to volunteer my time and knowledge to an organisation that commits to giving back to the community."
After some time as a Programming Assistant, James has joined the ranks as a freelancer for the organisation, working on a number of C31 productions, such as Octane, Small Biz Big Ideas and the live-to-air studio program Talking Fishing; as well as projects for non-profit clients such as Swimming Victoria and Vision Australia.
In his work as a freelancer, James has found himself working on many commercial livestreaming productions, using these as a training exercise for himself. "My goals are to get ahead of the curveball in the broadcasting world by learning everything I can about live streaming and C31 is the perfect place to do this." he told us.
